Accessible City Bus, Umeå Institute of Design, Sweden, 2009

I believe, dedicating seats for people with special needs cause discrimination by itself. May be that's why most people avoid using these areas. Instead of making these dedicated seats, we should provide an equal service that will give same opportunities to everyone.

The Accessible City Bus Project is my Master Degree Project in Umea Institute of Design in Sweden. It is a free transportation service that provides equal opportunities to everyone in a diversity based society.

The project started with a discussion about accessibility problems of existing buses. With the help of my colleague Fredrik Nilsson, I contacted his mother, Britta Nilsson, who was the transportation service chef in the Umea municipality and I ended up in designing a new interior of a city bus which gives an accessible public transportation service to everyone considering the equality approach.

The project is not going to be realized by any bus company, but it will be used in creating a new discussion on public transportation regulations. This discussion will include what requirements should be asked to be met in public transportation proposals and how city buses should be bought from bus companies.
