Problem Analysis

Considering the user research and interviews with experts, I have made a problem analysis and divided the problem areas into 4. They are all very important problem areas and each of them would need further analysis and study separately.

Environmental Problems

These are the problems that the passengers face in the public transport environment such as bus stops, roads and pedestrian and bike paths.

In a cold climate like Umea, the conditions of the environment affect quality and accessibility of the public transport as much as the effect of the public transport vehicles themselves. I have made a huge list of these problems in a report that I give to the municipality.

Hardware Problems

These are the ones that are faced especially in the interior layout, special equipment for people with special needs, information systems and technical characteristics of the buses.

Hardware of the bus is the area that will be addressed the most during the design process of the project. I will try to find some answers to this problem area and work on it more.

Human Related Problems

These are the behaviours of the service givers as well as the passengers that might affect the quality of the journey.

The Reggae King
Talking about this problem area, I would like to mention how behaviours can effect quality of our journeys by telling a story...

There is a bus driver who is called "the reggae king" in Umea.
I got on his bus once. We were waiting at the bus stop and the bus blinked to us before stopping at the bus stop. That was a very unfamiliar and warm behaviour for a Scandinavian bus driver. I got on the bus and saw that smiling and welcoming face, acting cool with a very very loud reggae music on the background! He was driving very calm and greeting the other busses by lifting his left arm very slowly.

Later I asked about him both to the drivers and the passengers that I interviewed with. I got the same answer: He is the kindest coolest nicest bus driver in the city! He greets all the passengers and looks after especially the old women. He calls them "my queen, beautiful lady, etc" and they appreciate it a lot! The women passengers tell that they feel very safe on his bus.

Organizational Problems

These are the problems such as time scheduling, bus lines and bus routes planning as well as applications of regulations and standards and service planning. The greatest problem that I saw in this area is the lack of standards in public transportation system. There are no standards on how information should be given and made accessible, how bus stops should be designed with its walls and furnitures, etc.
